The following morning, Albrecht stepped onto the dense forest trail, happy to be away from his few accompanying servants, and to a greater extent, escape the fanatical scientific devotion of his father. The woods had always been his sanctuary as a boy, and old habits lingered.

Expectation surrounded his father like an oppressive miasma: demands of how one should behave, should conduct themselves, how one should think. The years had not blunted the axe, as his father consistently ground it. And then there was Ursel. Her condition had grown worse, the endless demands for her child now almost a chant. Albrecht believed she lay beyond the reach of any man. Only God could save her soul.

His groundsman believed he’d seen fresh boar tracks this side of the river, and Albrecht joined him for a spell, enjoying the break from the cloying atmosphere of the house. While the groundsman headed deeper into the woodland, keen to impress the house guests with a splendid feast, Albrecht found himself on a familiar path, one that would lead him to the small pool. The women were often found there, and with his pencils and parchment, he aimed to add another page in his growing works of beauty, lose himself for an hour away from his father’s immoral plan for Ursel.

“One must seek out the disturbance at the origin,” Durer had said. “It is hopeless to dam a river at the mouth; you block it at the source! This episode began with the loss of the child, her fragile tolerance rejecting the strong seed placed within. It is here, to the initial cracking of the mind, that we must focus our attention.”

Albrecht pushed a low-hanging branch from his path and pressed on, boots whipping through the high grass. Nearing the pool, he was accustomed to hearing the fun and splashing of the frolicking women by now. Perhaps on this trip he would remain alone, abandoned by the curve of flesh and fullness of breast, free to record other splendours of God’s kingdom.

He wondered if his father had fulfilled the initial step of his plan. While the influential families of Borshdadt were not immune from tragedy, their estates provided them with plentiful food and comfortable housing. The same could not be said for many residents of the town.

Among the peasants, disease and famine ran rife. Families suffered and struggled to endure. Durer intended to benefit from this. Children could be bought for a pittance if one so desired. In the market square or at social commitments, Albrecht heard tales of missing children, yet this was accepted as the norm among the poor. Rarely did a noble child vanish without a trace.

Our child would still be the tiniest of infants should it have survived, thought Albrecht. Can my father purchase an innocent babe for his hypothesis and retain his morality?

He envisioned his father’s books, the sacred human body spilt and spread, picked apart. His father would dissect the very soul if able.

Albrecht had since decided he would have no part of the dastardly scheme.
